Nigerian doctors suspend strike over Ebola

Public doctors in Nigeria today August 7th called off their 5-week old strike to help with the fight against the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in Nigeria.

In a statement issued by the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, the doctors listed “the incursion of Ebola into Nigeria” as a main reason for suspending the strike.

Just yesterday, the Lagos state government through the Commissioner for Health, Dr Idris Jide, had appealed to striking doctors to call of their strike so as to help contain the spread of the virus.

Update: The doctors have since denied calling off the strike. They said they met yesterday to talk about calling off the strike but couldn't reach an agreement.

When it comes to fighting Ebola there's no "commando", even as they are quite enthusiastic about helping they should be very careful

Commendable! But how will these our brave and courageous doctors protect themselves from getting infected? May God bless and protect our doctors

nice one but they have to be careful so that they will not be affected. but why can't govt. luk into there matter and pay them there moni nah so that to avoid more trike.

I used to be a doctor in Nigeria and i totally do not see sense with them calling off their strike at this time.
They are just going to expose more health workers to the disease.
What are they fighting ebola with please?
No treatment,no vaccines?.
What exactly do they expect these doctors to do?
The few health workers in touch with Patrick sawyer are on their sick or death beds.
Luth draws a crowd on a daily basis. Some cases would surely go undetected and other patients would get the disease.I believe the spread was even slow bcos only private hospitals were open.
At this point,Only God can help us.

Since there is no cure for the disease....what are fighting it with? At this rate everyone should protect themselves and their family. Anyone who is infected should be quarantined and even medical persons should have minimal contact with such person.

Thank you....doctors going back to work....would increase the spread of this epidemic because this action would draw more people to the public hospitals which is usually over populated....and health workers have no curative treatment yet and no protective gears for the healthvworkers....
We should remember that.Ebola is disease and poor socioeconomic status is a risk factor for its spread...overcrowding encourages it's spread... We are only going to aggravate the spread because Nigeria as a whole is ill equipped to contain it...

They avnt called of any strike. If at all they will call it off; my dear, it not gonna be for Ebola reasons oo.Are they immuned? Ebola Is no respecter of doctor oo.Doctors try fighting for their money & oda selfish things, not for d people.U guys shouldn't be deceived. In fact, d spread of Ebola will increase like wildfire wen they call off d strike. Pls people, take all d precautions, even with ur Doctor. Make sure he wears his gloves on u ooo.Health personnel r primary distributors of Ebola.Be warned......I am Mama

LUTH wey no fit contain the misquitoes wey dey fly even for labour wards. How on earth will they be able to contain EBOLA??? The strike action is a blessing in disguise... More pple will def get the virus if these hospitals dare open up...

Anonymous said...

Can all the states test for Ebola? The doctors are going to live in morbid fear of Ebola every day because any illness will be thought to be a possible Ebola case. But what can they do? If they weren't on strike before now would they have gone on strike because of Ebola? They will be forced to accept whatever fate befalls them because for now there is no way out but to pray that this Ebola is contained and does not spread. If not, health workers go die finish. A&E, I salute o. OPD, I salute too o. That one chair every patient sits on when they go in to see the out-patient doctor.......mehn.

They should not call it off o. It would expose a lot of people to it. NMA should act responsible for once. In fact they should even declare a week or two weeks sit at home public holiday especially in Lagos so pple are not in contact with each other. And order buses especially coasters to stop sitting 5 on each bench and squeezing pple. We need to restrict the spread and cut it off now that we technically have 7 cases. NYSC and religious camps should be banned for now. Everybody should also try to boost their immune system. Prevention is better than cure.

Why would a true doctor go on strike. I have never heard of this happening except in Nigeria. Clearly, the doctors do not subscribe to the hippodratic oath and must have gone into the profession for a different reason. Well, thank goodness they had the good sense to return.

Anonymous said...

get ur facts straight Linda, the strike is still on going.

Adeola said...

Aunty Lisa defender of the universe and hippocratic oath, why not come and work in the system and then decide if doctors should go on strike hiss.... the medics that are now infected with this virus how much do you think their hazard allowance is? what do you think is in place to protect them, make their jobs easier or even appreciate their selfless effort? abeg take several back seats.
The system is warped and the earlier people stand up to say "NO", the better for the country as a whole unfortunately some people may suffer
